When was the last time someone else, particularly a prospect or client, asked you – Why do you do what you do? Or, even better, when was the last time you asked yourself – Why do I do what I do?

Were you caught off guard? Did you not even have an answer? Don’t feel bad as this seems to be pretty common amongst busy professionals. It has become so easy to get caught up in what we do or how we do it that we often forget to ask the question that will truly lead to our success and happiness.

In this article we are going to explain why starting with ‘why’ is so important and how to find your ‘why’ to start growing your business.

Start with Why

Why Ask Why?

Everyday we consume a ton of content – from articles to videos – that teaches, inspires and draws out positive and negative emotions. Amongst the pages of content and hours of videos, one particular piece of content has resonated with us ever since it was first shared in 2009. The following video will force you to really think about why you do what you do so we’d like to share it with you in hopes that it will have the same affect on you that it had on us.

Start with Why

Back in September 2009, Simon Sinek, a best-selling author and optimist, presented his tips to leaders at a TED event in Puget Sound on how to inspire action. The following 18 minutes are worth every second of your time.

imFORZA’s “Why”

Do you know why you do what you do? Really, what drives you everyday to continue doing what you do?

Knowing the answers to these questions are so important as they will define your company, its services, and you. More importantly, your “why” will set you apart from your competitors, provided that it is unique and genuine.

So, what is our “why”?

We do what we do because we truly believe that the services we provide, and the experience and knowledge that we share, will help a business grow.

We are not the pioneers of these services, nor are we the only ones who provide them. However, we may just be the most passionate about why we do what we do though. This passion is not drawn from pure emotion either. It is driven by years of hard work, learning from many mistakes and hands-on experience with many different businesses and successful strategies.

We have grown our business solely off of the same services that we offer to our customers. We’ve never quite understood why some companies would sell products or services that they have never used themselves. Worse yet, we never understood why customers would purchase these services knowing the company selling them doesn’t even use them.

Golden Circle

Find Your Why

Hopefully by now you see the importance of starting with your ‘why’. The next step, of course, is to discover what your ‘why’ actually is. This can be difficult for many business leaders, but it doesn’t have to be. To find your ‘why’ follow our simple tips below and/or consider taking Simon’s Why Discovery Course:

  • Examine your business’ past when times were going “perfectly”
  • Don’t do market research, you won’t find it there
  • “Making money” is not a why, think harder about what really drives you
  • Do not think about what you want to achieve in the future, your ‘why’ should already exist
  • Think about, but don’t ask, your most loyal customers
  • Do not use another company’s ‘why’, your ‘why’ should be your own

If Simon’s TED talk, or the tips provided above, are not helping you find your ‘why’, then let us know as we’d love to help find your why and use it to grow your business.

Use Your Why

The Golden Circle, as presented by Simon Sinek, has stuck with us and hopefully with you as well. If you’re a business owner or marketing executive for a company, then we encourage you to define your company’s why before anything else. If you’re a customer looking for website design, development or online marketing services, then we ask that you find an agency that has a “why” that you believe in.

We hope that you find that company to be us. If so, then we would love to help your business grow, as we have grown ours and many of our clients’.

Hey Vinny, I’m really trying to figure out my why… I have some different things that might be my why, but I think if I could settle on something, it could really be a game changer. Did you actually take Simon’s course? I’m considering it, but $99 is a lot to me right now. Thanks for any thought/advice you might have!

Thanks for reading our post, Derrick.

And don’t feel discouraged as we’ve spoken with a lot of businesses that have had a challenging time pinpointing their “why”.

Fortunately for us we didn’t need anything other than Simon’s TED talk to inspire us to hone in on our “why”, but I’m sure Simon’s course is worth every penny.

If you’d like to share what you think is your “why” with us along with an explanation of your business, then we’d be happy to provide some input. You can also email it to us if you’d prefer to not post your information publicly.

We’d love to help in any way that we can…especially for something as important as this.
